At the Chanakya Mall in New Delhi, the LAB created an interactive, immersive jewel within the luxury retail space. Inside the main hall sits a grand three-story elevator bank—a physical touchstone for the entire mall. The LAB chose to transform this elevator bank into a living, breathing beacon that would provide moments of both surreal surprise and peaceful serenity. It was important to create an experience that celebrated India’s colorful culture and design aesthetic. Mandalas, spiritual symbols that part of Hinduism and Buddhism, represent the universe. The LAB was captivated by the power that this symbol holds, and created a custom content library of symbols inspired by the mandala. The generative program is designed to have a life of its own, creating a new and unique mandala every time and interacting with the movement of the elevators and passersby. At special times during the day, this living animation becomes a nebula haze of particles set behind a celestial landscape of stars and fireworks.
